The kitchen is a room of the home where cooking and eating take place. It can be an attachment to a house (an “open plan” or “galley kitchen”), or it may be adjacent to the dining room of an apartment, condominium, or townhouse (a “closed kitchen”).
A typical modern residential kitchen has a work area combined with the cooking area, called a “work triangle.” This often has an island or a surface that serves as both workspace and table space.
The modern kitchen has rapidly become the most efficient room in the house. More DIY projects are started to occupy vacant hours rather than actual house repair. However, some people are turning their kitchens into part of the family room, combining the two rooms for ample space.
Residential kitchens are typically smaller than those found in commercial establishments, with less equipment and smaller cabinets. A residential kitchen typically has a sink, dishwasher or both, an oven/range or cooktop heat source, refrigeration, and countertops with sinks, either separate or a single “farmhouse sink.” These items are usually arranged in a work triangle as well.
Commercial kitchens are generally larger than residential kitchens. Their purpose is to support the activities of a commercial establishment, such as restaurants or hotels. They have larger cabinets and equipment not required in a residential kitchen to facilitate more significant amounts of food preparation. For example, a restaurant requires commercial-grade dishwashers in the back of the house to accommodate more pots and pans that need to be washed.
The kitchen layout is the organization of kitchen furniture and other items in a particular manner. Kitchen design can affect time spent looking for a tool or ingredient, the frequency of using appliances and drawers, and the sanitation of utensils.
The kitchen cabinets are typically the main feature in communal houses and homes. Homeowners use them to store various pots, spices, plates, and other food preparation tools. Cabinets also aid in decoration within a kitchen with their wide range of small yet necessary features. Most kitchens have a set of cabinets on either side with a countertop in the middle.
In most cases, people do not want to spend too much time cooking and preparing meals at home because they are busy with work or other engagements during the day.
